Lamp Sockets Made Simple
Lamp sockets may seem small, but they play a big role in how your lighting works and looks. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right one for your lamp or project.
Popular Socket Types
-
E26 / E27 (Standard Screw):
The most common socket. E26 is used in the US/Canada, E27 in Europe. -
E12 (Candelabra):
A small screw socket for decorative lights and chandeliers. -
B22 (Bayonet):
Twist-and-lock base, common in the UK. -
GU10 / GU5.3:
Used in spotlights, often with LED or halogen bulbs. -
G4 / G9:
Small pin bases for compact lights like desk or cabinet lighting. -
Tube Sockets (T5, T8, T12):
For fluorescent tubes — each size fits a different tube. -
E39 / E40 (Mogul):
Large base for high-power or industrial bulbs. -
Other types:
E17, E10, G13, R7s, and screw terminals — used in more specific or custom lighting setups.
Choosing the Right One
To find the right socket, keep it simple:
-
Check your bulb type.
The bulb and socket must match. -
Look at your lamp or fixture.
It usually lists the socket type required. -
Make sure it fits your wattage.
Don’t use a bulb that’s too powerful for the socket. -
Think about the design.
If the socket is visible, choose one that looks good too.
